A recent report has come to a stunning, some would say even fiery, conclusion, small SUVs just aren’t all that safe.
According to crash tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, only two of 13 small SUVs received “good” or “acceptable” marks in front-end crash tests with the 2014 Subaru Forester earning the first, and the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport taking home an “acceptable.”
All of the other small SUVs, such as the Jeep Wrangler, the Ford Escape and the Honda CR-V, that were tested received “marginal” or “poor” ratings.
This means that many buyers will steer away from the poorly rated small SUVs in favor of the two acceptable and good models or another class of vehicle altogether. This is despite the better fuel economy offered by smaller vehicles.
